Big thanks to everyone that was snapping pics of us two Super Nerds at #ITEXPO! Great panel sitting with Alex @geilt today as Ouali @ouali talked Google Glass and wearable apps. I’ll post some pics and tweets Im finding below. To sum up some of my points: -Even 10 mins prior while getting my badge at the booth, an employee asked “Is that a camera”. So yes you hear that a lot. To diffuse the paranoia and explain the benefits and I always start by mentioning the Translate App and the recently viral Firefighter/Developer story. -Mentioned my term Glass Mugged. Means cant go five feet without someone running after you to stop you and ask questions or see it. -Best App? Hands down navigation for me. Mentioned I stress tested it with 2 road trips over 1000 miles in a month. Talked about the clean card UI. Slowly changing the industry to pro-minimalist Something as simple as changing the color of the estimated arrival time tells me traffic forecast. Turns off until need direction, like an upcoming turn Smart enough to know that turning head while using walking directions should move map. Not on driving mode -Battery life currently is not so hot. -Wifi and/or Bluetooth connection. With unlimited plans starting to be capped, people are worried about going over data allowances. Enterprise Google Glass vs Avegant Glyph Review – Wearable Apps
What better way to end a work week then sitting at a downtown Miami bar with CEO, @Ed Tang, and his Avegant Glyph on my noggin. As it was fresh from winning CES’s Best of Show award. But it wasn’t the Glyph that really blew me away it was his iPhone5. Why? Because when demoing the Glyph wearable, it was hooked up to his iPhone5 and I couldn’t help but stare at the unopened Kickstarter app icon, with all 1,843,200 pixels. If I clicked that app, then on their first day, I would of saw that in only 4 hours they hit their Kickstarter goal and it was climbing around $600,000. Currently, just a few days later, this campaign is at $803,109 and not stopping. If you want to validate any piece of tech hardware or wearable what better way? This is a huge accomplishment for any startup, it funds innovation and says “yeah you’re on to something”. The lean startup gods are smiling. Avegant Glyph Review & Experience: It was a two part hands on test. One Glyph was on an iPhone the other hooked up to a laptop. First, was the iPhone. I listened to music, quite loud I must say, then played an interesting racing game and even got to see how apps reacted to being literally blasted on to my eyes. (with no Google Glass type material middle man) Second, was a laptop with 3D movie of a jellyfish. As an avid scuba diver I can say it was semi-realistic without that whole stinging thing Im used to. But since Im antifun and brag about not owning a TV (not a gamer or a movie buff) I didn’t really take this test to heart. So I would recommend checking out experts in those field’s blogs for exacts. Field of Vision: Its hard to describe. This isn’t the old school Virtual Reality displays that blocks out your entire view. You could easily look down and respond to an email or text. I will admit the side to side view was smaller then I expected, but still more then enough. Probably, due to the fact I went in thinking of a red and black Nintendo Virtual...
Mayor Philip Levine You Just Picked The Wrong Fight (Against Local Tech Startups).
Open Letter: Dear Mayor Philip Levine of Miami Beach, I get slapped in the face a lot at the local south beach boxing gym, but I haven’t been hit as hard as reading your stances on tech startups. [response to “Miami Beach mayor: Take your tech start-up gospel, and shove it“] Let me introduce myself mayor, to whom you just picked a fight with. My name is Daniel DiMassa and tech startups are more of a religion than passion. A year ago today, I was subletting in Manhattan sharing a wall with Empire State Building and being invited to closing the New York Stock Exchange. My nights were spent at Incubators like Alley NYC or in private whiteboard brainstorming events at IBM on Madison Ave. But after having a taste of living on Miami Beach years prior, I knew I had to come back. My visit back was Nov 21st when I came to apartment shop, but my very first stop was to hit a RefreshMiami event with a popular Facebook Engineer. Most would be worried about packing, stretching legs or finding a place –not I. Looking at your resume, you know startups or at least one. So you know my pain of constantly telling new-comers or “wantrepreneurs” tech startups are not like the movies. They aren’t sexy large offices, with chalkboard painted walls, dj’s spinning music and calling it quits early for the bar. Realistically, they are working from home behind the glow of a monitor for more hours then thought humanly possible, all while being stressed 24/7 (hence my chewed finger nails) and out right frightened. So I am confused by your lack of office space line. Lets look at one south beach startup I was advising years ago. The young entrepreneur had his biggest break with me at 10pm on a Friday night as we were sitting on his miami beach highrise’s washer and dryer. Again this isn’t the movies, so many top companies have been formed in garages and tiny apartments with pizza boxes strewn around. Miami Beach has both. So why Miami Beach? Many startups fail due to burnt out founders, we can agree. A year ago, if...
Google Glass Skins are In! Thanks Gpop.us! Google Glass Skin Review
So I feel like king of the nerds thanks to my new skins. Hit a tech event with them and had more visitors then the other 4 at the show. [Update:The 2nd custom skin comes in. Cant say enough about GPOP.US. Matches brand perfectly] Recently, I came up with the term Glass Mugged. Which means you cant go 5 feet with out someone running after you to play with Glass and ask questions. Thank god for Screencast! ..And a big apology to my Key West Scuba diver, who EVERY TIME someone chucks on the Glass they accidentally Google Hangout Video call him. Sorry Brian. So these skins are cheap, fun and supposedly easily removable. Standard Glasshole style. I mixed 2 Google Glass Skins and make the joke: Business up front (sleek carbon fibre) and party in back (blue circuit board on the side) Learn more at Gpop.us or Follow David Lee on Twitter. ...
